G F Carmody was educated at St Edmund's College, Canberra, and at the Australian National University (M.Ec). He joined the Commonwealth Treasury in 1970 and held various posts (including a two year period with the IMF in Washington), resigning in 1984 to join ACIL Australia Pty Ltd as a Senior Consultant. He has been engaged in consulting work in the NSW retailing industry on a number of occasions.

Peter Costello was educated at Carey Grammar and Monash University where he graduated in Arts and Law with Honours. He was called to the Victorian Bar, after practising as a solicitor in Melbourne for some years, in 1984 and has established himself in the fields of commercial law and industrial relations. He is a part-time teacher of Industrial Relations at Monash University and he has appeared in a number of recent cases against trade unions at Common Law.

Wayne Gilbert has been General Manager of the South East Queensland Electricity Board, SEQEB, since January 1984. He was educated at Melbourne Grammar School and the University of Melbourne where he graduated in commerce. He became an Associate of the Australian Society of Accountants, and pursued a career in the brewing industry prior to his appointment to SEQEB.

G O Gutman is a graduate of Melbourne University (MCom), has undertaken post-graduate work in Oxford, and has taught as a Visiting Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Much of his professional work has been as a Canberra public servant in a variety of senior posts concerned with agricultural, trade and economic policy, with the development of Papua New Guinea (before Independence), and the Northern Territory. Currently, he controls his firm of economic consultants which specialises in corporate policy issues, problems of resource economics and the establishment of joint-venture projects.

Gerard Henderson was educated at Xavier College and Melbourne University. He taught at LaTrobe University and the University of Tasmania, obtaining his PhD for his thesis on the relationship between the Australian Catholic Church and politics in the period 1940-1960. He was an adviser to Mr Kevin Newman who was variously Minister for Repatriation, for Housing, and for National Development from 1977-80 and is now Senior Adviser to the Leader of the Opposition, Mr John Howard. He also worked in the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations from 1980-1983.

Paul Houlihan was brought up on a dairy farm at Nar Nar Goon, West Gippsland, Victoria. He was educated at St Patrick's College in Ballarat, and after a stint back on the family farm at Nar Nar Goon he bought an irrigation farm at Jerilderie in the Riverina, NSW.

Subsequently he worked for the Federated Clerks' Union, as Tasmanian State Secretary, for ten years.

He was appointed Industrial Director of the National Farmers' Federation in December 1980.

John Hyde was educated at Hale School in WA, and then became a successful wheat farmer. He became Vice President of Dalwallinu Shire and subsequently the Federal Member for Moore 1974-83. In the Parliament he became known as the leader of the 'Dries', a heterogeneous group of politicians concerned about the irrationality of much of government economic policy.

Since 1983 he has been Director of the Australian Institute of Public Policy and recently edited 'Wages Wasteland'---a critique of Australia's Industrial Relations system.

Sir John Kerr PC, AK, GCMG, GYVO, QC, was educated at Fort St High School and the University of Sydney. He won the University Medal in 1936, and was admitted to the NSW Bar in 1938. He served in the 2nd AIF 1942-46. He returned to the Bar after the war, becoming President of the NSW Bar Association in 1964. He was appointed a Judge of the Commonwealth Industrial Court and of the Supreme Court of the ACT, 1966-72, Chief Justice of NSW 1972-77, and Governor General of Australia 1974-77.

He was President of the Industrial Relations Society from 1960 to 1963, and President (pro tem) of the Industrial Relations Society of Australia, in formation, from 1964-66.

Ian McLachlan was educated at St Peter's College and the University of Adelaide. He is a director of a number of companies, including Elders IXL, as well as managing his family's pastoral companies.

He has been President of the National Farmers' Federation since 1984.

Hugh M Morgan was educated at Geelong Grammar and the University of Melbourne. He was appointed Executive Director of Western Mining Corporation Ltd in 1976 and Managing Director in 1986. He has served on the Board of the Reserve Bank of Australia, as a Trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria, and is Chairman of the Ian Clunies Ross Memorial Foundation.

Michael G Porter was educated at Scotch College, Adelaide, and Stanford University. He has held teaching and research appointments at Stanford, Simon Fraser, Essex, and Australian National Universities, as well as advisory posts in government and the I.M.F. He has been Professor of Economics since 1976 and Director of the Centre of Policy Studies since 1979 at Monash University.

I C P Spry, QC was educated at Melbourne Grammar and the University of Melbourne where he obtained a Doctorate of Laws. He was called to the Victorian Bar in 1963, and made Queens Counsel in 1979. He has taught at Melbourne and Monash Universities. He was an associate of the late Sir Owen Dixon and was personal assistant to the Solicitor General during the tenure of Sir Kenneth Bailey. He is the author of 'Equitable Remedies' and is currently editor of 'Australian Taxation Review'.

John Stone was educated at Perth Modern School, the University of Western Australia, and then as a Rhodes Scholar at New College, Oxford. He joined the Australian Treasury in 1954 and served in a number of posts at home and abroad, culminating in his appointment as Secretary to the Treasury in 1979. He resigned in 1984 and then became a Visiting Professor, Centre of Policy Studies at Monash University, Consultant with Potter Partners, Melbourne, and Senior Fellow of the Institute of Public Affairs.
